SCHOOL OF SACRED ARTS INTERNATIONAL TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM DRAWS FROM THE BEST OF BALI’s YOGA RESOURCES

On Saturday, October 8th, 2011 a popular month-long School of Sacred Arts (SOSA) yoga teacher training kicked off at Ubud’s the Yoga Barn, with students warmly greeted as members of a “tribe” by principal instructors Simone MacKay and Troy McFadden. “We’re going to be learning, growing, expanding and really transforming over the next month,” said SOSA Cofounder, McFadden, “that’s what yoga was designed for.”

Providing an overview of the fourth international program in front of the 21 yoga students, Simone and Troy presented to students several of the training course’s fellow co-instructors, many of whom teach classes at the Yoga Barn and elsewhere in Bali and the world.

Each master instructor is assigned to a different component of the training, bringing variety and stronger depth to the training experience, according to MacKay, who is also School Director.

“There are different flavors of teachers here to open you up to the full spectrum of how you can learn,” she said in her introduction, “We’re all here to support you.”

Troy reminded participants that the 12 hour-a-day teaching structure on offer was intended to support a full immersion practice, so students could “live and breath yoga” for the next 30 days. “We only bring in the teachers who are the most passionate, so you can benefit and be served the most,” he pointed out.

Troy encouraged his students to take full advantage of the teacher training being in Bali, just one aspect of the training program that sets it apart from others. “Bali is a strong mother, if you attune yourself on a high path from the beginning, you can maximize your experience,” he said, encouraging self-care and a gentle setting of pace for the entire group, given the intensive schedule ahead.

The first week of the training will largely comprise of meditations, Vinyasa/Hatha Flow asana practice, and pranayama in the early morning. Explorations of the philosophical and theoretical aspects of a yogic lifestyle, a posture clinic after lunch, and a Yin yoga class rounds off the day.

The SOSA training is held twice a year at the Yoga Barn, and is available to yoga teacher candidates of all backgrounds and experiences. Some minimum aptitude and commitment guidelines are involved in the application process, however. The next program starts on April 8th 2012 and applications are already being accepted.
