Yoga Barn Expands Using Pro-Sustainability Model as “Shared Responsibility”

BALI, INDONESIA– October 31, 2011: The Yoga Barn in Ubud is on course to complete a 3.5 acre (80 Are) expansion project in Nov. 2011, which will make it one of the most spacious dedicated yoga, retreat, teacher training, and community centers in Bali. Guided by a sustainable development model, the expanded Yoga Barn project will leave 80 percent of its new land untouched, feature 100 percent recycled materials, and restrict motor vehicle access.

The new and improved Yoga Barn is envisioned as an open-air space; about double the size of the existing venue, and will include onsite accommodations, a larger amphitheater space, and an additional studio for workshops and classes, among other improvements.

In a statement, Yoga Barn Cofounder, Charley Patton, described the Yoga Barn’s alternative eco-friendly construction approach as a “priority,” to counter the growing trend of building, congestion, and vanishing open space in Bali. “We are sensitive to our footprint and with concerns about keeping Ubud the way it ‘used to be’, said Patton.

Patton urged others to give stronger precedence to preserving Bali’s natural beauty and culture, calling the need for other sustainable models like Yoga Barn’s, “a shared responsibility for all.”

The Yoga Barn is already Ubud’s first and most popular dance, yoga, meditation, and healing arts facility. With the creation of a new “Green Zone” as part of the expansion, the center will benefit from more “rice fields, gardens and trees,” according to Patton.

“Ultimately, our project will keep alive the ‘Oasis of Calm’ vision, the practice of giving back to the community, and the conscious living choices we have always treasured all day and every day,” Patton predicts.
